Communications Theory: Identity and Difference

These pages are derived from a Communications Theory seminar in which students discussed elements of popular/media culture which are (or have been) personally meaningful to them. The themes shown on the primary page (above) are those which seemed to make up the 'core' of the reasons why people might identify with or relate to particular media figures.





The most straightforward example of identification and empowerment came from those people who had loved or wanted to be superheroes such as Superman and Wonder Woman.


But other real-life heroes such as Madonna (again) and Drew Barrymore had shown that people or, significantly here, women could do what they wanted and achieve their desires.

Anna from BBC2's This Life was also mentioned in this context someone who knew what she wanted, was sharp and clever and funny, didn't take any rubbish from anyone.
