Why am I doing the Post Me Stuff project?

Well, sometimes people send me things anyway (see the first thing I was sent below), which partly gave me the idea, because it seems kind of magical that one person can put up some electronic signals on a site in cyberspace and then can receive, from another person, a response in the 'real world' in the form of a nice letter with stamps on.

This is also a variation on the 'mail art' projects which are far from being a new invention [EXTERNAL LINK: Yahoo's mail art listings].

The first thing I was sent

I started the Theory.org.uk website in January 1999. Quite soon afterwards I was sent an envelope containing a photocopy of a page of an (unidentifiable) play and two photographs. No letter or anything. I studied the play to see if it contained any references to my forthcoming death or anything scary, but it didn't and I couldn't see what the point was.

However the photos both included, in graffitti form, the email address of 'DJ Future'. So I sent an email to it and asked if they had sent me this thing, and it was indeed DJ Future, a guy from Liverpool, who had liked the site and decided to send me this mysterious communication. (I never found out what the play extract was all about).

Still, you can see that random post is quite a good thing to get, once you've worked out that on balance it's probably not a death threat.
